September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, a time to come together as individuals, families and communities to raise awareness, share prevention strategies and spread messages of hope. Suicide is a serious and growing concern, but through connection, education and compassion, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who are struggling.
In Texas, suicide remains the second leading cause of death for people ages 15 to 34. In 2022, approximately 4,368 Texans lost their lives to suicide, which is about one every two hours. During the past two decades, the state’s suicide rate has risen nearly 30%, reaching 14.4 deaths per 100,000 people.
