Music Therapy

Using music interventions to address therapeutic goals

Music therapy is a clinical and evidence-based practice that uses music to address the physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals. Through the guided use of musical activities like playing instruments, singing, and listening, our board-certified music therapist helps individuals improve their well-being, manage stress, and enhance their quality of life. This therapeutic approach is beneficial for people of all ages.

Common Questions about Music Therapy

Do you need previous music experience or training to receive music therapy services?

You do not need any music experience or training to receive and benefit from music therapy services. Music therapy is about utilizing music to address therapeutic skills, not musical skills.

What happens during a music therapy session?

Sessions are personalized based on the client’s needs and goals. Activities may include:
- Playing instruments
- Singing or listening to music
- Writing songs or lyrics
- Relaxation and mindfulness with music
- Movement or rhythm-based activities
The music therapist adapts each session to support the client's goals. Sessions typically last 30–45 minutes and are usually scheduled weekly, although frequency may vary based on individual needs, treatment goals, and availability.

How is music therapy different from music lessons?

Music therapy focuses on therapeutic goals, not learning to perform or master an instrument. While music skills may develop naturally, the primary focus is on addressing the client's goals - whether it be expressing emotions, strengthening attention skills, improving communication skills, or reducing anxiety.

Who can participate in music therapy services?

We work with children, teens, and adults.  Anyone can participate regardless of musical experience or ability, as long as you are engaged and motivated by music!
