Recent policy changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) are raising questions for many Texas families who rely on food assistance. With new rules taking effect this year, Alexander Jewish Family Service (Alexander JFS) is helping individuals understand what’s changing and what support is available.
Recently, Alexander JFS CEO Carl E. Josehart spoke with FOX 26 Houston, and Morgan Zerigue joined Houston Public Media KUHF (interview begins at 1:47 mark), discussed how SNAP policy updates may affect families across the Houston area and where people can turn for support.
Beginning April 1, several new restrictions and requirements will affect SNAP recipients in Texas.
First, the state will limit certain food purchases made with SNAP benefits. Candy, gum, and sweetened drinks will no longer be eligible purchases under the program. The change is intended to encourage healthier food choices and applies to beverages containing at least five grams of added sugar and certain candied snack products.
Second, expanded work requirements will impact eligibility for some adults receiving benefits. Adults who are not working must complete at least 80 hours per month of employment, volunteering, or job training to continue receiving benefits beyond three months in a three-year period.
In addition, the age range for these requirements has expanded. Adults up to age 64 may now be subject to these rules, and some parents whose children are 14 or older may also be required to meet work requirements.
These changes could affect many households. In Harris County alone, hundreds of thousands of residents rely on SNAP benefits to help meet basic food needs.
During his interviews, Josehart emphasized that many people receiving SNAP benefits are already working but may still struggle with rising costs of living.
“Many SNAP recipients work full time but still don’t earn enough to make ends meet,” he explained in the FOX 26 interview, highlighting the importance of maintaining a strong safety net for families.
The expanded work requirements could be particularly challenging for individuals trying to re-enter the workforce later in life, especially those in their late 50s or early 60s who may need updated job skills for today’s job market.
As policies evolve, Alexander JFS remains focused on helping people maintain stability and build pathways forward. The agency offers several services that can help individuals affected by SNAP policy changes, including:
These programs are designed to help individuals not only address immediate needs but also build sustainable independence.
